The method

How we choose

Everyone in this category says they lab-tested twenty racks. We haven't tested any, and we say so. Here is what we do instead — and it is reproducible, which a lab claim you can't check is not.

This is our substitute for a "test lab" page, and it is deliberately more useful than one: every criterion below is sourced from documents you can read yourself, and the cost-per-year math is shown as a formula you can run on any product, not just the ones we picked.

The four criteria

1. Gauge steel and frame construction

On a rack or a bench, steel is what outlives everything else. We look at the gauge (the thickness of the tube wall — 11-gauge is roughly 3mm and stiffer than 12- or 14-gauge), the upright dimensions (2×2, 2×3 and 3×3 inch tubing resist bending very differently), and whether the frame is welded or bolted. Every gauge and dimension we cite comes from the manufacturer's own listing. Where a manufacturer does not publish the gauge, we say "not published" rather than guess. 2. Warranty terms — read, not skimmed

A warranty is a manufacturer's own estimate of how long their product lasts, in writing. We read the actual document and distinguish what is covered from what is excluded — a "lifetime" frame warranty often sits next to a one-year finish warranty, and those are two very different promises. We quote the fine print rather than the marketing headline.

3. Repairability and parts availability

Buy-it-for-life gear is gear you can fix. We favor products that use standard hardware, sell replacement parts (J-hooks, pins, pads, bushings), and use a hole pattern or plate size that is compatible with the wider ecosystem rather than a proprietary one that strands you when the manufacturer moves on.

4. Cost per year of ownership

This is the number nobody else publishes, and it is the one that actually serves the buy-it-for-life buyer. The formula is simple and you can run it on anything:

Cost per year = price ÷ realistic service life (years)

We use the warranty term as the floor for service life — a conservative estimate, since well-built steel routinely outlives its warranty. A $500 rack with a lifetime frame warranty, kept a conservative 15 years, costs about $33/year. A $200 rack you replace in three costs $67/year — more expensive, over time, than the one that cost more up front. That is the whole argument of this site, reduced to arithmetic.

How the scores work

Each product carries a set of scored metrics (build, warranty, capacity, value and so on) and an overall figure that is simply their mean. Those scores are judgments from documented research— manufacturer spec sheets, published standards, warranty documents and aggregated owner reviews. They are not measurements we took in a lab, because we do not have one, and we never present them as if we did. The visible star rating is that editorial score; it deliberately never appears as a rating in our structured data, because that would imply a test we didn't run.

Prices

Every price on the site is pulled live from the Amazon Product API and stamped with the date we checked it. If our data is more than 48 hours old, the number disappears and the button reads "Check price" instead. We would rather show you a gap than a figure that has rotted. No price on this site is ever hand-typed.

When a pick loses its spot

Recommendations are reviewed on a roughly 90-day cycle and whenever a reader flags a change. A product that is discontinued, has its warranty quietly shortened, or develops a documented reliability problem gets replaced. Our editorial policy covers corrections and independence in full.
